The New York Public Library has put a literal twist on Instagram stories, transforming literary classics like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Yellow Wallpaper, and Metamorphosis into animated novels.
Followers can find the stories in the highlights section of the library’s Instagram page. More classics will be added over the next few months, turning the profile into a digital bookshelf. Each “Insta Novel” will include the full text of the story, augmented with bits of animation and illustration designed by Magoz.
By giving classics a modern, digital facelift, the New York Public Library has found a way to engage younger readers and boost interest in reading while print is on the decline. This execution is also a creative way to boost library card sign-ups and downloads of SimplyE, the library’s free e-reader app.
